MAKAI

Makai refers to corn (known as maize in Nepal), which is a staple food in Nepal, especially in the hilly and mountainous regions where rice cultivation is difficult. it is a common sight to see corn hanging from the roofs, balconies, or wooden beams of houses, which is done to dry and preserve it naturally. It is prepared in various forms, including roasted corn (bhutta), corn flour roti, dhedo (porridge like dish) and boiled corn. Maize is also used to make alcoholic beverages like Tongba and Chyang, which are popular among indigenous communities like Limbus, Rais, and Tamangs. Makai represents Nepal’s diverse food culture and reliance on traditional crops.
