MADAL
Madal
is a hand drum made of hollowed-out wood with animal hide coverings on both
sides. It is played by beating both drumheads with the hands, producing a deep
rhythmic sound. It is the primary percussion instrument in Nepali folk
music, especially in Dohori (folk duets) and traditional dances. The Madal is
significant in Nepalese culture as it brings communities together through music
and dance. It is also used in celebrations and ethnic and cultural
performances, particularly in Newar, Magar, and Gurung communities. The
instrument’s rhythmic beats are central to many folk and contemporary Nepali
songs. The Madal represents Nepali cultural identity and musical heritage.
