Dashain symbolizes the victory of good over evil. For followers of Shaktism, it represents the victory of Goddess Shakti. In Hindu mythology, the demon Mahishasura brought terror to Devaloka (the world of the gods), but Durga killed the demon. His first nine days of Dashain symbolize the struggle that took place between the different manifestations of Durga and Mahishasura. The tenth day is the day when Durga finally defeats him. For other Hindus, the festival symbolizes Rama’s victory over Ravana, as narrated in the Ramayana.
